5 Weymouth Wanderers 3

Weymouth fully played their part in a cracking cup tie but ultimately couldn't cope with the strong aerial power of their higher division hosts and were left a little frustrated at the end of a pulsating match.

Wanderers more than matched their opponents early on and took the lead on 15 minutes. Harrey Price, who was excellent all afternoon, broke up an attack on the edge of the Wanderers box before feeding Tom Beckett on the counter attack who in turn sliced open the Westland defence with a lovely pass to Ryan Price. Price still had work to do but his thumping left foot shot rounded off a lovely move.

Westland twice scored from headers from corners for a 2-1 half-time lead but the cup tie was anyone's game to win.

Within seconds of the re-start Westland went 3-1 ahead from another header but the Wanderers dug deep and enjoyed their best spell of the match. Firstly, Tom Beckett was through on goal and his shot beat the keeper only to see it agonisingly bounce back off the upright and away to safety. He was not to be denied only moments later however, when a lovely through ball from Harrey Price saw him beat the Westland keeper with a neat finish and the game was now very much in the melting pot.

Moments after this Beckett, who was giving the defenders a torrid time out paced his marker in the penalty area who clearly tripped him as he ran past but referee Butcher failed to give Weymouth a penalty which provoked a furious reaction from the Weymouth bench.

With 10 minutes remaining Weymouth gambled and pushed Zak Bentley forward leaving the defence exposed and Westland scored two goals on the break.

Still Weymouth were not finished though and Sami Bessaad came on and caused havoc in the Westland penalty area. At the second time of asking he found the ball at his feet and his goalbound shot was stopped by a Westland hand and this time referee Butcher pointed to the spot. Price gave the keeper no chance with his spot kick.

As the players returned to the half-way line and with still 3 minutes plus injury time remaining on the clock referee Butler prematurely, and rather mysteriously brought proceedings to an end leaving the visitors a little flat following what had been a good performance.

Paul Hutton said after the game, "Geoff and I were really pleased with the boys commitment and character today. We battled really hard throughout the game and refused to lie down. The two key moments in the second period needed to go our way but once again the sporting gods were frowning upon us. For the second week running we feel that the key decisions went against us and at risk of sounding like a broken record the boys deserved better than this".

Thanks to captain Sam Hutton for doing his linesman duties today.

Man of the match: Tom Beckett who led the line magnificently all afternoon and caused the Westland defence no end of problems.

Finally, 1 Poole Borough 4

Weymouth were beaten for the first time this season but could feel slightly aggrieved at the final outcome which belies what in fact was a closely fought game.

Despite the recent torrential rain the pitch was playing perfectly and Wanderers made a number of enforced changes from the team which had performed so well seven days ago.

Weymouth should have drawn first blood on 10 minutes when awarded a penalty by referee Cameron Lucas who held centre-stage all afternoon, but Ryan Price saw his spot kick pushed onto the bar and from the rebound his header didn't have enough power to beat Bromley in the visitors goal.

Price attoned for his earlier miss just 5 minutes later when from a fine cross from Adam Cowne on the right Bromley failed to hold onto the cross leaving Price with a simple tap-in from close range.

Almost instantly Poole replied and a good piece of finishing from Jones brought the scores level.

Towards the end of an even first period a pivotal moment saw Poole take the lead. Referee Lucas adjudged that Rob Townley's foot was high as he cleared a ball away and an indirect free-kick was given some 8 yards out. Poole Borough seized on the gift with alacrity and a 2-1 deficit at half time was harsh on the Wanderers.

The second half saw Wanderers create as many chances as the visitors but were punished on the break and Poole took a 3-1 lead which made it very difficult for the home side with 20 minutes of the game remaining.

Weymouth continued to try and get the ball down, and they opened up Poole with a classy move involving a flicked header from Price to Place but the latter blasted his shot straight at the keeper when it was probably easier to score.

Weymouth were still very much in the game however, and when Price used his body strength to shrug off his marker and put the ball in the net he stood aghast as referee Lucas adjudged that he had illegally won the ball. It was a moment which was quite fitting as it epitomised how the decisions all went against the home side in the second period.

In the last 10 minutes a penalty was awarded for hand-ball against Townley even though he was struck from close range and appeared to have his back to the ball.
Poole needed no second invitation to rub salt into the wounds with a fourth goal which gave the scoreline a very distorted look.

A fuming Paul Hutton was not available for comment on the match after the game.

Poole Borough manager Steven Rockinsham commented after the game that he felt the game had been "well refereed".

Thanks to Brett for his linesman duties today.

Man of the match:
